History

Status:Active, open to new members
When: On Wednesdays 10:30 am-12:00 pm
3rd Wednesday of the Month
Venue: Archibald Worthington Club

The 'History Group ' is formed by a bunch of like-minded
amateurs who find interest in the subject. We follow a varied
agenda based upon topics that appeal to our members.
We follow the u3a ethos of life-long self-help learning where
members teach and learn from each other.
Occasionally, we invite external speakers to cover topics of
interest and provide us with inspiration. 2026 saw us invite speakers to inform us of local history involving both historic ANGLO-WELSH wars and transport (the A49 Shrewsbury to Whitchurch road). However, our normal remit is for members to cover subjects both individually and within a group format.

This year, as a group, we have explored Shropshire Icons and debated the value of History as a subject! Individually, our members have covered subjects from home (Hanmer Home Guard to the History of Port Sunlight) and abroad (The Soviet Bloc After Russia to Britain's Seafaring Tradition).

We plan to continue our eclectic mix of subject matter through 2027.
